I’m currently staying in my 4th hotel in about a month. First- the Radisson at LAX when my flight to Vegas got cancelled; Second- the Courtyard Marriott in Clackamas when my mom and I couldn’t get her car up the hill to her house after I finally made it to Portland; Third- the Hilton Garden Inn in Calabasas when we made it to Calabasas at 3:30am after driving since about noon. All of these hotels were very nice, spacious and clean– a very refreshing change from my flat in London.
But now here I am at the “Good Night Inn” which is much more affordable than those other hotels (although this time I’m not actually paying), but it’s your typical affordable/right off the highway hotel. Very small, bare minimum, the kind of motel that usually makes me wonder about the cleanliness although it is actually very clean. I got spoiled there for a little bit with those other hotels. I forgot what “under $100/night” hotels are like 😉
On the bright side, if anyone wants to come down for my graduation, this hotel is a lot cheaper than other malibu-area hotels! Right now the rate is $64+tax/night. Memorial Day weekend (which happens to be the weekend of my graduation) it is $78+tax which comes out to $84/night. That’s the rate for the room with two queens which I imagine must be bigger than the room I’m in (one queen). It’s right around the corner from my apartment, and just about an 8 mile drive through the canyon to Pepperdine’s campus 🙂
So.. I’m back in California for school which may make “travel blog” seem inappropriate. However, I already have the following trips booked!
The last weekend of January: NYC!
February- Valentine’s Day Weekend (coincidental timing): North Carolina to visit my bro + wife + niece + nephew because my mom will be there as well.
March- going back to Portland for at least part of my Spring Break! 🙂
In April, I will most likely be making another trip to the East Coast, although that trip won’t be for “fun,” it will be for General Ritchie’s memorial service at Arlington (no confirmed date yet, but the last word was sometime in April).
Today, January 12th, 2009, I have started my final semester of law school. Crazy! Yesterday, my mom and my brother Will were in town for a very sunny, yet windy, day in Malibu and of course we took quite a few pictures!
This is a picture of me on Pepperdine’s campus yesterday. I have a very similar picture of myself taken about 3 years ago when I was first looking at Pepperdine in February of ’06. Crazy how time flies! My friend Carmen who came with me on that trip was single at the time, but now is married and recently gave birth to identical twin girls who I got to meet over winter break!

With some further delays, I did finally make it back to Portland around 4pm on Christmas Day… one week and one day after I had originally planned to be back in town. Crazy!
When we got back, I was determined to get my mom up her hill to her house. Sadly, her car (formerly my car… a 2-door Nissan 200sx) just isn’t the right car to try to climb a hill over mounds of snow! It has a really low, sporty bumper on the front that makes it get stuck on just a couple of inches 😉 But I was out there, in the dark, in my $$$ Paris boots with a shovel I borrowed from my dad, trying to shovel the driveway so she could get in. I was so determined, but I was also so tired, and after quite a few attempts and much spinning of Mom’s wheels, we finally gave up. We went to a nearby hotel and ended up spending the next two nights there.
Finally, on Saturday night, the snow melted enough so that we were able to get home. But then I got sick that night, and spent Sunday sleeping in between puking all day 😦 What a week!
Monday started to look up–I finally got in for a hair appointment so my hair is no longer washed out and semi-green looking, and I got a new car! I am now the very thankful owner of a 2008 Ford Edge. It feels so good to finally FIT in the car I own! I’ve been running random errands the rest of the week and having fun driving it around 🙂
And now… this morning we woke up to SNOW ON THE GROUND AGAIN. At a little after 4am I was outside with my mom trying to help her scrape the snow off her car so she could get to work. Brr! And there is crazy flooding all over town from all the rain and snow melt from last week. They keep talking on the weather channel about how the NW “just can’t catch a break.” Serioooously. I just need Mother Nature to chill out next weekend, because I’ll be driving the 967 miles from Clackamas to my new home in Calabasas next Thursday or Friday. Snow and/or flooding could cause some problems with that, even with my all-wheel-drive SUV 😉
